2010 Vergé 'Vielles Vignes' Chardonnay

Catherine and Gilles Vergé are two of the most serious and dedicated exponents of natural wine production I have ever met. They have been farming here for more than 30 years and to this day they are passionate campaigners for organic, additive free wines.

They farm just over three hectares around the village of Viré in the heart of Macon and they grown only Chardonnay. Their wines are simply some the highest quality and most palate saturating examples of chardonnay to be found in all of Burgundy - the vines that produce the fruit for this cuvee are now over 130 years old.

Catherine and Gilles firmly believe in allowing a wine to become naturally very stable before it goes to bottle and, as such, all of their cuvee see four years in tank before bottling.

This cuvee from 2010 is especially oxidative. The wine was left in ullage, under flor for many months and the aromatic profile is reminiscent of Manzanilla. I really can't recommend it highly enough.
